Finding the Italy Your Family Left Behind

Most people come to Italy for the postcard. The Colosseum, a gondola, a plate of pasta with a view. And those things are wonderful. But every so often I work with someone who wants something the postcard can’t give them. They want to stand on the street their great-grandfather walked away from. They want to know what the air smells like in the town their last name came from.

That kind of trip is different. And it happens to be the one I love most.

I didn’t just visit. I lived it.

I sold what I owned and went to live the life, not photograph it. I lived in Albania for a stretch. I spent time on the Italian mainland, down through Puglia, and in Sicily, where my own family comes from. And yes, I’ve gone back and forth to the States through all of it. My life right now runs between the US, Albania, the Italian mainland, Puglia, and Sicily, and that constant back and forth is exactly why I know these places the way I do.

What I came to know was the everyday version, not the polished-for-tourists one. Mornings at the market. Long lunches that turn into longer afternoons. The slow rhythm of places that don’t perform for visitors because they don’t have to.

Puglia is one of those places. The heel of the boot, all whitewashed towns and olive groves and a coastline most Americans never think to ask about. You can sit in a piazza in a town of a few thousand people and feel like you’ve stepped out of time. Nobody is rushing you. Nobody is selling you anything. That is the Italy that stays with you, and it is the Italy most itineraries skip right past.

Sicily is where it gets personal for me. My family is from Cattolica Eraclea, a small town inland from the southern coast, and I’ve stood on the streets where generations of us lived before anyone crossed an ocean. That feeling, of standing somewhere your name came from, is the thing I most want to help other people find.

Why roots travel needs someone who knows the ground

Here is the honest truth. You can find the famous sights in any guidebook. What you cannot find in a guidebook is how to spend a meaningful day in a town that isn’t on the tourist map. How to get there. Where to eat when there’s no review to read. How to make the trip feel like a homecoming instead of a checklist.

That part takes someone who has actually lived the life, not just sold it. I know the difference between the places that look good on Instagram and the places that will move you. I know how to build a trip around a single town that matters to your family, and surround it with the kind of southern Italy you’ll be glad you saw. Slow, real, unhurried.

I’ll say this clearly too. I help with the travel, the experience, the homecoming. I’m not the person for the legal or genealogical paperwork, and I’ll always point you toward the right professionals for that side. My job is to make sure that when you finally stand where your family stood, the trip around it is everything it should be.

So tell me about your family

This is the part I never get tired of. Where did they come from? A village in Sicily? A town in Puglia you’ve only ever seen as a name on an old document? Even if all you have is a surname and a region, that’s a beginning.

If any of this stirred something in you, send me the town. Tell me the story you grew up with. Let’s see what your Italy looks like..
